1. Message from the Top

Thanks to the votes of the veterans and employers who use Veteran of Foreign Wars sponsored VetJobs, I am pleased to announce that for the twelfth year VetJobs has been voted to the WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award (www.weddles.com)! Of the twelve years this prestigious award in the internet career world has been in existence, VetJobs is one of only four employment sites that have been voted in all twelve years! The other three employment sites are CareerBuilder.com, Monster.com and DICE.com. They are heady company for a niche site like VetJobs!

This award marks VetJobs as one of the top 30 job boards of over 400,000 career and employment sites on the Internet. Your votes have confirmed once again that VetJobs is the leading military related job board and one of the top career sites on the Internet! The staff of VetJobs wants to personally thank all of you who voted. We appreciate your support and will continue to work hard to earn your votes again for the 2015 WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award.

See article #2 below for the thirty recipients of the 2015 WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award. I want to congratulate the other 29 sites that have been selected for 2015 as they are the cream of the employment web sites on the Internet. When you are looking for a job, the list of 30 sites in article #3 is the place to start as they are recognized as the best of the best by the users!

On the economic front, Jim Clifton, CEO of Gallup Polls reports that for the first time in 35 years, American business deaths now outnumber business births.

There are 6 million businesses in the United States and the vast majority of them are small “Mom and Pop” businesses. Here are more statistics on businesses in the US:

• 3.8 million have four or fewer employees.

• 1 million with 5-9 employees;

• 600,000 with 10-19 employees;

• 500,000 with 20-99 employees;

• 90,000 with 100-499 employees;

• 18,000 with 500 employees or more; and

• 1,000 companies with 10,000 employees or more.

Those small businesses are the backbone of our economy and responsible for employing roughly half of all Americans. Moreover, while estimates vary, small business creates roughly two-thirds of all new jobs in our country.

For those reasons, the health (or lack thereof) of small business is the single most important long-term indicator of America’s economic health. According to Clifton, new data suggests that small businesses are in deep trouble. For the first time in 35 years, the number of business deaths outnumbers the number of business births.

The US Census Bureau reported that the birth and death rates of American businesses crossed for the first time ever! 400,000 new businesses were born last year, but 470,000 died.

The problem isn’t so much that businesses are failing, but that American entrepreneurs are simply not starting as many new businesses as they used to for a host of reasons. The United States is now number 12 among developed nations for new business startups. The countries ahead of the United States are Hungary, Denmark, Finland, New Zealand, Sweden, Israel, and even financially troubled Italy.

Clifton says the root of the problem comes down to three issues: (1) difficulty of accessing capital (loans); (2) excessive and burdensome government regulations; and (3) an overall malaise about our economic future.

Business owners are permanently smitten with an entrepreneurial bug, and the only thing that prevents them from seeking business success is the expectation that they’ll lose money.

Sadly, the lack of new business startups is confirmation that American’s free enterprise system is facing problems.

In a side note, while the President was speaking about cyber security on January 12, the Islamic State hacked the Central Command’s social media pages on YouTube. The terrorists put up propaganda videos on YouTube and posted soldiers’ personal data on CENTCOM’s twitter feed. ISIS published the home addresses of soldiers and along with other information on military personnel. Some of it was in public domain. Some appeared classified. Much of it was personal information that could put our soldiers’ families in the targets of terrorists. This incident is another reminder to be very careful of what one puts on the Internet.

Finally, if you are travelling this month, be sure to take store bought cookies, candy, paper goods to your local USO. And with them happy birthday!

2. 2015 WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Award Winners

WEDDLE’s User’s Choice Awards are all about quality and the best that job boards have to offer. The award recognizes the elite of the online employment services industry according to the most discerning judges around-that would be the users who use the sites. 5. Employers Forecast to Increase Use of Temp Agencies By 10.5%

John Zappe of ERE (ere.net) reports that staffing agency employment has been among the fastest-growing sectors of the U.S. economy for the last several years. Since the recession’s official end in June 2009, the industry has added 1.24 million new jobs, 12.3 percent of all new private sector jobs created.
Now comes a prediction from the staffing and human capital consulting firm of G. Palmer and Associates that temp employment will grow 10.5 percent this quarter over last year. That translates into about 135,000 new staffing agency jobs.
